DRUMS • GUITAR • PIANO
Here's a rundown of my professional experience, with examples showcasing my abilities:
It would be fair for me to proclaim myself an expert drummer.
Since 1984 I've invested several thousand hours practicing, recording and performing rock, jazz, punk and classical genres. I have a balanced appreciation of theory and intuition, which informs my teaching abilities.
I learned from three drumming teachers during my first seven years as a student, each with a different regard for formal and casual approaches.
If you're keen to focus on one or the other I'm happy to oblige. Just let me know what you hope to accomplish as a musician and we'll make it work.
Check out this short instrumental from my 2016 solo LP (which I also wrote, produced and played all the instruments for). My drumming is jazzy in a 'Golden Brown' kind of way, with the grunt of Queens of the Stone Age.
I'm close behind on the guitar. While not the type to rip into a freeform solos like Jimi Hendrix, I've mastered the role of rhythm guitarist. You'll find me adept at flat-picking and fingerpicking. Once again, my success is informed by theoretical and intuitive approaches, and I'm happy to teach both.
Guitar for me is a performative and songwriting tool. I like to play songs for people and I've learned hundreds or more. I'm also quite fond of bass and its difference in demands to six-string guitar. Being a good bassist requires another mindset, which I can teach you as well.
Here's an example of my ability on electric as both a rhythm and lead guitarist, from a concert film I fronted and produced in 2019:
My keyboard skills are less advanced, so you'll find me best suited to your early development on the piano.
Alternatively, I have a much broader knowledge of vintage organs and modern synths, and their applications in contemporary music.
Here's an example of my skills on a Moog (well, a copy of one), from the same concert:
