Music Videos
Nearly every band I've worked with has had at least one professional filmmaker.
Now I am one myself. Here's a selection of some fine work from the lot of us.
FONT: Time (2024)
The seventh - and possibly last - video from the LP, is very conveniently about the end of all things. It was a major pleasure to be involved with Mick, Mark and Angie on this artistic path. Extra thanks go out to Vincent Donato from our label Laneway Music, which promoted the hell out of these clips, resulting in over a quarter of a million plays.
FONT: Lone Wolf Returns (2024)
The band has a minor animal theme to the LP that this song comes from.
Bears, dogs and wolves have positive appeal to most of us, which leads to an easy-to-please video. And the journey of the lyrical "protagonist" provides all the necessary momentum to propel the visuals. It's a road trip with no roads.
FONT: Pass The Curse On (2024)
This has a strong personal theme, relating to family and self-determination.
It was created with AI platform 'Runway'. While this software is still developing and refining, its imperfections served the fraught nature of the song perfectly.
And it seems to have resonated, with 100,000 views in its brief public life.
FONT: Take Me By The Hand (2024)
Mostly made by drummer Mark Adams, this was a quick rustle-up, taking advantage of creative commons B&W footage.
Who doesn't love a pack of puppers and doggos?
FONT: There's A Tunnel At The End Of The Light (2024)
There's a strong dose of socio-political commentary in the lyric, which was given a fairly literal translation in the visuals and editing pace.
We utilised some more of the phone-based camera filters as seen in the video for Pretty Lately.
FONT: Line Up (2023)
A lot of fun making this one, spending a few hours on a go-karting race track.
Towards the end of the clip, we utilised some experimental post-production techniques to create a hybrid of real life and animation. It took a fair amount of planning and testing, though the imaged result came out as desired.
FONT: Pretty Lately (2023)
This is the first of 9 videos I am co-producing for FONT's debut LP, "Coburg-19", under the instructions of Melbourne record label Laneway Music.
This is a family album of sorts, showing the band out and about on the town.
Cold Irons Bound: I Wasn't Thinking At All (2023)
It's amazing what you can achieve with a green screen, smartphone and a warehouse full of drums, guitars and amplifiers.
This is my first standalone music video as director, which I also edited.
Sam Cashman: Kara'age (2022)
I was commissioned by the City of Maribyrnong to produce in-store performances by two VCA jazz groups.
Sam and his compadres are phenomenal musicians and he's an astute composer, straddling the line between art and accessibility.
This was an enjoyable experience, as the group was calm and professional.
Trevor Bryan Cotton's WILCO WORLD: You Are My Face (2019)
Not long before the pandemic made its way around the globe, I popped over to Perth to front a 25th anniversary tribute to one of America's great bands.
Eleven cameras and 30 channels of audio captured this 13-piece band, playing 22 songs.
It's tough to pick just one, though it seems everyone here is firing at once.
Tumble Turn: Cash Jobs (2018)
The band was fortunate to have some videographer friends with DSLR cameras to capture and build a more narrative-based clip.
I hope you appreciate my commando roll at the beginning.
Tumble Turn: Bunnings Sausage (2018)
Roped into this project as its drummer and producer, I ended up co-producing the music video too.
This band was a heap of fun and its a shame we can't continue. We're all good friends, though.
Strangely, it found its way on to national primetime news during the Bunnings 'fried onions' scandal.
Blac Blocs: NVDA (2010)
Blac Blocs was an anarchistic post-punk band I drummed in and produced while living in Perth many moons ago.
This video, Directed by Richard Eames, and Co-Produced by Helena Tay Eames and bassist Ray Grenfell, won the 2010 WAMi award for Most Popular Video.
French Rockets: 1x1 (2010)
This slice of Krautrock goodness forms one side of a 12" release I produced for French Rockets in 2009.
The following year they went on to win the WAMi award for Most Popular Single/EP, with compadres Injured Ninja.
Injured Ninja: IDDQD (2010)
This dose of heavy rock experimentalism was recorded the day before and forms the flipside of the 12" release.
Not only did the song share the 2010 award for Single/EP, it was also nominated in the Video category.
2010 was a watershed year!
